When Japan’s reigning “percussion queen” Keiko Abe premiered her Prism Rhapsody in 1995 as marimba soloist, could she have expected the incredible critical response and many adaptations of the work that followed? Prism Rhapsody elevated the marimba’s status in the musical world in so many ways. Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances were not conceived as “dances” per se, but as three substantial movements summing up the composer’s personal and artistic life.
