Charles Dutoit, Conductor
Swiss maestro who has served as Music Director and Chief Conductor in many world-class orchestras, Music Director of the Canton International Summer Music Academy (2005–2007)
Mahler’s Symphony No.3 is a colossal work both in duration and orchestration. Written in his composing hut at the Attersee near Salzburg, Mahler’s music captures the gorgeous beauty of the surrounding landscape. Because the music reflects sounds of nature—flowers, forest animals—along with mankind, angels and love, Mahler felt strongly that this work shouldn’t be considered a symphony but rather a celebration of the miracles and transformations of life.
