French impressionism reigns supreme in this concert, with two works each by Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, inspired by the eponymous poem by Stéphane Mallarmé, coined a totally new and sensuous musical language before the dawn of the 20th century. Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye (Mother Goose) has long been a beloved suite imbued with magic and childlike wonder; his Concerto for Left Hand was specially commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm during the First World War. The concert closes with Debussy’s Images: three musical pictures inspired by England, Spain and France.
