This program features two generations of Romantic composers: Robert Schumann was born three decades before Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in a different part of the European continent. The Overture to The Storm, written in 1864 when the young Tchaikovsky was spending a summer in Ukraine, received its premiere posthumously; his “Little Russian” symphony quotes three folk songs he heard in Ukraine, which is a rarity in his oeuvre. Schumann’s Cello Concerto epitomizes a different approach to Romanticism, where the dialogue between soloist and orchestra is likened to lovers sharing intimate words harboring hopeful aspiration, albeit with a tinge of sadness.
