George Gershwin’s Cuban Overture took its inspiration from the sights and sounds of Havana, infused with jazz and Latin folk elements, adding a colorful sheen on the usual orchestral palette. The tango is now a universally beloved genre, but contemporary composer Aaron Zigman’s Tango Manos is a breakthrough in utilizing that dance in concerto form. Arnold Schoenberg was deeply influenced by Maurice Maeterlinck’s symbolist play Pelléas et Mélisande and wrote his symphonic poem on the same subject, with vivid colors and tone painting. The expressionist mindset injected in the narrative gives each character specific melodic motives.
