Two Tchaikovsky concertos constitute this program, each featuring an outstanding young Chinese soloist. Among violin concertos, Tchaikovsky’s has long been praised as an exemplar of Romanticism—in structure, expression and technical brilliance. Initially inspired by Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole, Tchaikovsky finished his violin concerto within one month, a rainbow of orchestral color that continues to impress audiences today. Of the composer’s two piano concertos, the first might have been more popular. The second, however, is distinguished by an expansiveness that is organically symphonic, attesting to Tchaikovsky at the zenith of his creative powers.
